SHE AWOKE

AT ONCE

by Katie Schaag

[…] she awoke at once, only to find the telephone cord coiled seductively like a snake oil
salesman, recipe cards fluttering helplessly toward the ceiling:

STARK – QUICKLY NOW. SO VERY
LITTLE TIME. A STAR IN THE SKY,
AN ANT ON A FIG, WHAT IS LOVE.
NOW IT IS LOUDER BRIGHTER
GLEAMING SHIMMERING
BENEATH YOUR EYELIDS IN THE DARK

Katie Schaag is a writer and artist working on her PhD in English Literature at University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her work investigates performativity, artifice, power dynamics, and queering gender, and has been published by Ugly Duckling Presse, Requited Journal, Metatron/Ömëgä, and Rabbit Catastrophe Press.
